This post is part of CampusReform.org's guide to the nation's top 100 colleges. Each day, CampusReform.org profiles a different college, examines its political climate, and offers items of interest to conservative students, parents, and alumni. Click here to see the full list of college profiles.

Tulane University is located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana. A private institution, it enrolls 7,210 undergraduate students and employs 1,100 faculty members. The school, founded in 1834, has been closed just twice in its history: during the Civil War and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. For its May 2006 graduation ceremony, Tulane hosted both George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who noted the unique experience of the senior class.

Campus Life

Tulane has twelve political student organizations on campus, of which nine are left-leaning.

The liberal groups are the American Civil Liberties Union; Amnesty International; College Democrats; Roosevelt Institution; Social and Economic Rights Advocates of Tulane; Tulane Environmental Action League; Tulane Socialist Organization; Students Organized Against Racism; and the Green Club. The Roosevelt Institution is part of a national network of student groups that research, write, and promote policy proposals; it is ostensibly nonpartisan, but functionally liberal.

The conservative student organizations are the College Republicans, Bureaucrash, and Tulane Students for Life. The italicized groups are affiliated with CampusReform.org’s Campus Leadership Program, which provides students with advice, assistance, and support.

Tulane Students for Life is very active on its campus. The group hosted noted pro-life speakers in the 2009-2010 school year, including Rebecca Kiessling and Serrin Foster. Tulane also hosted the 2010 Students for Life State Conference, which featured pro-life leaders from across Louisiana. The conference was headed by the Tulane Students for Life President, Dominique Monlezun.
